Closure of the Chamber by the Israeli Authorities
On the tenth of August 2001 and without prior notice, the Israeli Authorities closed the offices of the Arab Chamber of Commerce and Industry in East Jerusalem, falsely claiming that the Chamber of Commerce was operating without an official permit. Besides that, the Chamber of Commerce was established in 1936 and has been operating for the last 65 years, without any objection from the Israeli Authorities.
Closure of East Jerusalem The closure of East Jerusalem over the past ten years, which intensified considerably since the start of the second Intifada has greatly affected the eastern part of the city economically, socially, as well as culturally. In many ways, the closure did cut East Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank. It resulted in the transfer of many Palestinian institutions out of East Jerusalem in the early nineties. Jerusalem, to a large extent, used to be the Palestinian center for economic, social, and cultural activities. Because of the current situation, this has changed over the years as activities moved beyond the city borders.
